It's Show Time!!!! PTG!!!!

Tomorrow night is our PTG performance! The students will be performing at 1:00 pm for our school and at 6:00 pm for the PTG. Students should arrive to the classroom by 5:40 with their costumes on. All students must attend both performances. We will not be able to perform the show in it's entirety without everyone's attendance. Thank you! See you tomorrow!

Brunch, Bake sale, and Valentine's Day!!!

Dear Parents,

Our Booster Club will be hosting the Valentine’s Champagne Brunch on Sunday, February 13th after all of the morning Masses. Since this was originally scheduled as our class Sunday bake sale day, we have been asked to co-sponsor the brunch. The Booster Club has asked that third grade parents help with various tasks throughout the event. Each family needs to sign up to work one of the three shifts during the event. Any parent who is unable to help on the day of the brunch should send in $5.00 (paid by no later than Friday, February 11th) that will be used to help in the absence of service. Listed below are the shifts that we need coverage for at the Sunday brunch. Please write your name under the time that you are available to work and return this form by no later than Monday, February 7th. I will then use the responses to create a schedule to be used that day. Once the schedule has been created you will receive another update from me about the brunch and a confirmation phone call.

We will also be selling car rosaries, made by our third grade students and the marvelous Mrs. Randi Shea, on the day of the brunch for $7 apiece and will need a parent to help with selling them. If you would like to purchase the rosary made by your student you may do so by sending in a note and $7 by no later than next Friday, February 11th. The remaining rosaries will be sold at the Valentine’s Champagne Brunch on February 13th and 100% of the proceeds will go toward our third grade classroom.

Wait! There’s more! The very next day is the third grade on campus bake sale!! For this event, we need each family to donate baked goods to be sold at both recess and lunch. Any family that is unable to donate an item for us to sell at the bake sale is asked to donate $5 that will be used to purchase baked goods to sell. This $5 will be due on the same day as the brunch and rosary money, Friday, February 11th. Donated baked items should be brought to school the morning of the bake sale, Monday, February 14th. Please fill in the information below stating whether you will donate an item or donate $5 and return this information THIS Monday along with your sign up information for the brunch. If you are able to help in selling at recess and lunch please contact me as soon as possible.

Just when you thought I could have nothing else to say, I have one more request. Our bake sale day is also Valentine’s Day! We are very busy bees in 3rd grade!!!! Progress Report Reminder!!

As you know, our school uses Gradelink to give you regular access to all of your child’s grades. This means that you are able to access a copy of your child’s progress report on a daily basis. However, some of you may still like to receive a paper version of your child’s progress report on January 24th. PTG Performance Information Letter

Third Grade PTG Performance!!!

Dear Parents,

Our fabulous third graders will be performing for the PTG on Thursday, February 3^rd! This is just a few short weeks away!!! We have already begun to rehearse in class, but we still have a lot more work to do. The students will be performing a musical called “U.S. Geography: An Extraterrestrial Safari through States, Capitals, and Natural Features”. It is an extremely fun and educational show which teaches many things about our great country (which you probably guessed from the title J). In the musical the entire class will be aliens who have explored the United States looking for the best possible region for them to move to because they have not taken care of their home planet. The students and I are very excited about the show! It’s going to be spectacular…but we need your help!!!

As aliens the students will need alien costumes. In an effort to make this as simple and inexpensive as possible for all of us I am asking that each student have a pair of black sweatpants and a black sweatshirt. I have found both boys and girls Hanes fleece sweatpants in the color ebony available for $5 at Wal-Mart. Wal-Mart also has a “fleece crew sweatshirt” in ebony made by Hanes available for $5. This sweatshirt only seems to be available in boys’ apparel, but it will work perfectly for both boys and girls. Please visit the links to the website provided to view what the sweatpants and sweatshirt look like. I will also have the links posted on the class blog http://3rdgradebruins.blogspot.com .The website will give you information regarding which stores have sizes in stock or you can purchase online. I would like each student to have their sweatpants and sweatshirts by no later than Friday, January 21^st. I will be purchasing different fabrics this week to create belts and other accessories that will also be worn to make the sweats look more like futuristic alien suits. Some roles in the play call for additional pieces to be worn over the alien costume. If your child has one of those roles the additional costume item will be written at the bottom of this letter.

The students and I would also appreciate help creating a backdrop for our play. If you can help us to create a backdrop that looks like the inside of a spaceship or space station please contact me as soon as possible!!

I have made each student a copy of the script and a CD featuring all of the songs. I ask that you work with your child daily to practice their lines as well as the songs for the show. This will be a tremendous help as this is a long play, but the students’ will truly be participating in performance art! The creators of this play, Bad Wolf Press, only allow one copy of the script to be printed per student within their copyright restrictions; therefore, the script MUST travel back and forth between school and home when practice has been assigned for homework. Please make sure that it goes back into your child’s backpack after he/she has finished practicing for the day at home. Should the script become lost I am asking that each student pay $2 (a portion of its cost) in order for it to be replaced.

Field Trip Request!!!

We have been trying to complete a Science review in class to prepare for our chapter test. The students have had three days in class to complete pg. 36 #1-14 all. Today I asked the students who still have not completed the assignment to take their books and papers home to complete it. We have been learning about earthquakes and earthquake safety in class. We have discussed our school's emergency plan and will be participating in the Great Shakeout drill tomorrow along with over 7 million people across California. Today I gave the students a special assignment to be completed as a family. Please work together to answer the following questions.

1. Does my family have an emergency plan? Does my family have an earthquake/emergency kit?

2. What will my family do if we experience an earthquake? In other words, what's the plan?

If your family does not have an emergency plan in place, this is your opportunity to discuss what you will do. What will be in your emergency kit? Where will you keep it? Where is your family going to meet once you have evacuated? What are the best emergency exits in your house?

Tonight is OLA Barnes and Noble Night at the Citrus Plaza in Redlands! Our OLA School voucher number is 10254109 for those wanting to order online. Ten percent of every purchase you make comes back to our school! Be sure to let the cashier in the store know the voucher number to receive credit. Students who shop within the Citrus Plaza store between 3:30 and 8:00pm will receive free dress on Monday, September 20th. Our class has been given a different team name which means we now have different user IDs and passwords. So far we are having a fantastic first week of school! Part of this week's homework was to cover each of the hardcover text books. This assignment will be extended to next Thursday, September 9th. Also, students who did not finish their first Excel Math lesson in class today should have taken it home tonight as homework. It needs to be turned in tomorrow morning to the Math file in class. Welcome to Third Grade!!!!!

Dear Parents,

I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you and your child to the third grade! I am so excited to be able to work with your student this year. It is my sincerest hope that your child will have a positive learning experience and will achieve many personal goals.

As the facilitator of your child's classroom education, I will work with you to ensure that your student accomplishes to the best of his/her ability all of the necessary requirements of the third grade.

These requirements are included within the California Academic Standards as well as the Diocesan curricular guidelines. However, you are the primary educator of your child. I hope that I will have your cooperation throughout the year and that we will be able to work as a team to do what is best for your child.

Homework is an important part of learning new skills and will be given out in packets. Students will receive the packets on Fridays. Homework may be brought in to school during the week for review or clarification, but homework packets will not be collected for grading until Thursday of the next week. Students should spend no more than 30 minutes per day/four days a week on homework. Please let me know if your student is taking more time to complete the assignments. The first official homework packet will be sent home on Friday, September 10 and will be collected on Thursday, September 16;however, special assignments for the first weeks of school have been sent home today.

It is very important that your student continues to receive training in his/her Catholic character and morals. This training will contribute to a positive learning experience. In order to ensure that the environment remains one in which students can grow spiritually and academically I have developed a discipline plan. The plan below outlines the classroom rules, rewards for appropriate behavior, and consequences for inappropriate behavior. Please discuss this plan with your child, then sign and return this form.

Classroom Rules

Respect God, yourself, others, and all property.
Raise your hand before speaking.
Follow all directions.
Practice good listening skills.

Color Coded Consequences

Yellow card- Warning
Orange card- Write 25 sentences at recess, lunch, or at home. If behavior continues the amount of sentences may be increased in increments of five more at a time, but students will never be asked to write more than 50.
Red card- A detention slip will be issued. Parents will be notified through either an email or phone call.

Rewards

In addition to verbal praise your student will also have the opportunity to earn other rewards. At the end of each day, all students who have maintained a “green card” for their behavior will receive a raffle ticket. These raffle tickets will be kept in a jar throughout the week. Two Fridays per month, I will choose 4-5 tickets and those students whose tickets were chosen will win prizes. Students who completely all homework assignments neatly, correctly, and on time will earn a sticker on their homework folder for the week. Students who have 100% homework each trimester may also receive a small prize. In addition to individual rewards, there will also be a class incentive. The class may earn “poof balls” when they are demonstrating appropriate behavior in following the class rules or practicing our Schoolwide Learning Expectations. Once the students have filled the “poof ball” container, we will have a class party to celebrate.

All of the information presented in this letter along with many other important guidelines will be explained at Back to School Night next Thursday. I hope to see you all then as vital information will be shared. Thank you for the opportunity to work with your child. I'm looking forward to a great year of “Sharing Christ Today with the Leaders of Tomorrow!”

First Homework Assignments of the Year! :)

Dear Students and Parents,

Welcome to a brand new school year! You will receive your first official homework packet next week, but there are a few special homework assignments for these first two weeks of school. Please complete each assignment according to the due date below. Make sure that the students name and class number are on each sheet of paper returned to school. Thank you!

Student and Parent Homework due by no later than Thursday, September 2^nd.

Discuss the policies outlined in the Student/ Parent Handbook together as a family. Return signed “Verification of Awareness” for from the back of the Parent/ Student Handbook.
Return signed parent letter by Thursday, September 2^nd.
Complete “Tell Me About Your Child” and “Parent Roundup” forms and return.
Cover all hard cover textbooks.

Student Homework due by Thursday, September 9^th.

Read at least 6 days between August 31^st and September 8^th for20 minutes each day and record on your reading log.
Write Miss Visco a letter! Tell me about your favorite kinds of books, your favorite subjects in school, and the activities you like to do that help you to learn!
